Hijama, or wet cupping, is a therapeutic practice that involves making small incisions on the skin and using cups to draw out stagnant blood. This process helps improve circulation, detoxify the body, and promote overall wellness.
Hijama is generally safe when performed by trained professionals. Minor side effects like bruising or mild discomfort may occur, but they are temporary. At Zachary’s, we take every precaution to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
Before the treatment, hydrate well and avoid heavy meals. After the session, keep the treated area clean and dry, avoid strenuous activities, and follow any additional aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner to support healing.
Hadith on Hijama
1. The Practice and Encouragement of Hijama
• Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) was cupped, and he paid the cupper his wages.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5691; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1202)
• Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“If there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in a blade of cupping, drinking honey, or cauterization with fire. But I do not like to be cauterized.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5683; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2205)
2. Hijama as a Remedy
• Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“Indeed, the best remedies you have are cupping (hijama) and honey.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5680; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2215)
3. Angels’ Recommendation for Hijama
• Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘I did not pass by any group of angels on the night of Isra (the Night Journey), except that they said to me: O Muhammad, tell your Ummah to do cupping (hijama).’”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3477; Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2053 — Hasan/Sahih)
4. The Sunnah Days for Hijama
• Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to get cupped on the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the (lunar) month.”

• Salma (the servant of the Prophet’s household) narrated:
“There was no one who complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) of a headache, except that he said to them: ‘Go and get cupped.’”

• Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) fell from his horse onto the trunk of a palm tree and dislocated his foot. So he had cupping done on it.”

• Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) was treated with cupping on the two veins at the side of his neck and the base of his neck.”

• Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated:
